3 Best Crochet Hook Sets for Beginners (Under $20)

Hey everyone!

I moved into a new apartment a couple weeks ago and really tried to downsize on a lot of my stuff, specifically all of the hooks and yarn that I didn’t exactly need, which is kind of sad, I know. But you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do to save space! And let’s face it: I have a lot of hooks and yarn.

But It really got me thinking about which crochet hooks have been my personal favorites over the last several years. I started crocheting almost fifteen years ago and ended up buying and trying out an insane amount of hooks during that time. I tried them all: ergonomic hooks, steel hooks, tapered hooks, chunky wooden hooks, light-up hooks that come with replaceable batteries and all, you name it! I hadn’t thrown any of them out, even though I found my personal favorites long ago and stick with those for all of my projects now.

I’m big on hook sets rather than buying the common size hooks individually because it saves you both time and money. When I first started out crocheting I would just randomly buy hooks not knowing what size I needed (read my post about choosing the right hook size here), then when I started a project that needed a different size, I would have to go to the store and buy that hook individually. Very inconvenient!!

Lots of crochet hook sets additionally include other useful supplies like tapestry needles, stitch markers, gauge markers, tape measures, and scissors. Super helpful when you’re first starting out and aren’t sure which supplies you’ll actually use.

However, some of these sets can also be pretty spendy and most of us have a budget!

So let’s get into it.

3. Boye Aluminum Crochet Hook Set

Personally I’ve always loved the brand Boye for all of my crochet necessities. They make all sorts of crochet hooks, knitting needles, embroidery needles, stitch counters, everything you need to get started. The quality is decent and they’re super affordable, too. Most big stores like Walmart and Hobby Lobby carry them, but there’s also a variety of products available on Amazon.

This particular set is the first one I ever bought. Back then they used to include those little how to crochet booklets with them, but sadly they don’t do that as often anymore!

What’s included:

  • 8 assorted aluminum crochet hooks, sizes 3.125-6.5 mm (US D-K)

Pros:

  • Affordable price (under $10 in most stores)
  • Includes most common hook sizes

Cons:

  • Aluminum hooks are less comfortable than ergonomic hooks
  • Doesn’t include larger hook sizes for working with bulkier yarns
  • Doesn’t include any extra supplies like stitch markers and yarn needles–just the basics!

You can find this hook set here on Amazon.

2. BCMRUN Ergonomic Crochet Hook Set

This is the first ergonomic hook set I bought. They’re definitely an improvement to the aluminum hooks I started with, and not only do they cost a lot less than they did when I bought them but they’re also more widely available in stores. I will say that the quality of these isn’t quite as good as some of the more expensive hooks, which can be expected. But mine are still holding up after a good ten years, and under $10 is a great value 9 hook sizes and an assortment of crochet supplies.

What’s included:

  • 9 assorted ergonomic crochet hooks, sizes 2.25-6 mm (US B-J)
  • 9 yarn needles
  • 10 stitch markers
  • 1 measuring tape
  • Storage case

Pros:

  • Great value for price
  • Ergonomic material is comfortable on the hands
  • Includes wide range of hook sizes
  • Includes assortment of useful crochet supplies
  • Widely available in stores

Cons:

  • Handles start to loosen and slide off the hooks after repeated use

You can find this set here on Amazon.

3. Yarniss Ergonomic Crochet Hook Set

And finally, my top pick. I didn’t find these hooks until much later in my crochet journey, probably because they aren’t as widely available in stores as other brands, but I definitely wish I had! These are hands down the best, most comfortable hooks I’ve ever used. The ergonomic handles are super comfortable and gentle on the hands, especially if you crochet for long periods of time like me, and it’s a great value for under $2o. It even comes with a cute little storage case!

What’s included:

  • 14 assorted ergonomic crochet hooks, sizes 2-10 mm (US B-N)
  • 9 yarn needles
  • 10 stitch markers
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 storage case

Pros:

  • Great value for price
  • Ergonomic material is comfortable on the hands
  • Includes wide range of hook sizes
  • Includes assortment of useful crochet supplies

Cons:

  • Not widely available in stores

You can find this hook set here on Amazon.
